Program Description

The postgraduate Master's program "Master of Public Administration in European Studies (MPA-ES)" focuses on current and future socially relevant and technology-oriented topics and combines European competence with technical know-how. The degree program specifically addresses the changing requirements and needs of corporate practice and the public sector, which are created, in particular, by digital transformation. European policy education is linked with technology trends and policy areas at EU level in order to develop solutions for European and global issues.

The degree program features an application- and action-oriented approach based on practical everyday work in the public or private sector. You have to choose between two specializations – energy and climate or digital transformation. In the specialization courses, a basic understanding of technology and engineering is put in the context of EU political guidelines and regulatory mechanisms.

European Studies MPA-ES is a German and English taught degree program offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and allows you to organize your studies in a flexible way thanks to block courses and webinars. The interdisciplinary nature of the course is accentuated by the involvement of the various different RWTH faculties. In addition, soft skill modules and a compulsory internship offer you many opportunities to strengthen not only your holistic thinking, but also your networking skills. RWTH lecturers as well as various external lecturers from industry will teach the degree program. MPA-ES is aimed at students with a first university degree and at least one year of professional experience.

Degree Content

MPA-ES is an interdisciplinary course of study that combines EU knowledge with the topics energy and climate as well as digital transformation in an application-oriented way. This continuing education program begins with an in-depth look at the European Union.

The first semester comprises six modules focusing on fundamental aspects of the European Union, such as EU institutions, EU-relevant policy fields, European business and EU law, with particular emphasis on legislative and decision-making processes.

In the second semester, you can choose to specialize in either Energy and Climate or Digital Transformation (each 15 CP) and also select a soft skill module (5 CP). In addition to your Master's thesis (30 CP), an internship or a project (10 CP) is also a compulsory component of the program.

The modules are taught as block courses in Aachen as well as via webinars. During your self-study time, you will acquire new knowledge, reflect on and enhance what you have learned and prepare for your exams. The program lasts 3 semesters (90 CP in total) and is compatible with part-time work and family life thanks to its block-course format.

Career Prospects

The study program focuses on European and technical aspects as well as methodical competencies. This is fundamental in ensuring organizational processes and strategic decisions are created and managed in a responsible way in an EU context. In addition, you will gain skills to develop concepts that make the most of the emerging potential of digital transformation and new European policy developments.

As an MPA-ES graduate, you will be able to propose innovative solutions to European and technological issues. You will therefore not only be a European expert, but above all an important actor with technical and technological expertise in the EU policy areas of energy, climate, and digital transformation.
