From Getting Started to Getting Ahead – Can an Academic Career Be Planned?

How do I get off on the right foot when starting my career? How do I want to work later on and what companies reflect my interests? Am I better suited to a career in industry or in science? These are all difficult questions to answer, as there are so many different possibilities. Start a family or focus on your career? Get off to a flying start or find a job with set working hours? And what to do when?

At Futures Day on December 11, 2018, female students and doctoral candidates had the opportunity to intensely focus on these questions and to discuss them with human resource representatives or recruiters from industry and science in person. This was the third Futures Day organized by RWTH Aachen. The event aims to give women an opportunity to already zero in on their own personal ideas and plans for their future professional lives while they are still at university studying or completing a doctorate. Job and continuing education possibilities at RWTH were also presented – among them the Tandem Mentoring Programs as well as the Center for Doctoral Studies offerings and the Femtec Careerbuilding Program.

A moderated talk with representatives from industry and science and a networking get-together with beverages and snacks rounded out the day.
